101 Ways to Save the Internet

Wired 12.01: 101 Ways to Save the Internet

This is making everyone's lists.

I don't agree with some of the items. Things like "12 Make email addresses portable" show that the author clearly doesn't know what the hell he/she is talking about. If you want a portable address, pay for one through one of several vendors or register a domain (like paulbegley.com) and get e-mail through GoDaddy, Register.com or other registrars.

On the other hand, vigilante justice on spammers is something I have already started doing as I have time.

Another clueless suggestion:
71 Add a recall function for email messages Outlook (with Microsoft Exchange Server) does it, why can't everyone else?

Well, it doesn't really work under Exchange, how will it with with 'pure' SMTP servers? Once it leaves the Exchange Server, its gone. Even on the Exchange Server, if someone opens the message, the cat is out of the bag.... How do they propose to replace SMTP? The beauty of SMTP is that its so generic. Its been implemented on thousands of platforms. SMTP is older than many (most) of all mail users.

And another:
77 Create an email address directory.

Huh? I don't even know what they are talking about. We have LDAP, we have X.400, X.500 and databases. Do they mean a 'white pages' directory for everyone's e-mail? Who would run this? Would it end up as a virtual opt-in to every SPAM list in the world? Get back to me on this one.

Sarah has her NJ Drivers License

Sarah passed the "behind the wheel" test yesterday for her NJ Drivers License.

We had to find the Medford, NJ DMV site where she got her new NJ Digital Drivers License, then to the Madera Insutrance office to add her to our auto insurance policy.

Luckily, when I was checking our insurance cards for Sarah's test, I discovered all our insurance cards were out of date (we have insurance, but not the new cards). Robin sorted this out and issued us a set of cards for all the cars.

So far so good, but we *are* the nervous parents ("Call us so we don't worry about you lying in a ditch some where...")

Benchmark Marathon: 65 CPUs from 100 MHz to 3066 MHz

Tom's Hardware Guide Processors: Benchmark Marathon: 65 CPUs from 100 MHz to 3066 MHz - CPU Performance Check: AMD & Intel 1994 to 2003

I love benchmarks.

This is one of the most complete CPU benchmarks. My daughters are still running a bunch of 300-450 MHz boxes and they are more than adequate for general computing at home. With 356-384 Meg of RAM and fast hard drives, they are faster than some systems with 2-3X faster CPU's. Duh!

Original link from /. This is an interesting article and not something I expected to find on MSDN.

Bill Wolff and I were just talking about what *really* caused Breakaway (dot bomb we both joined) to die. Bad business model, bad accounting (should have beat the inexperienced managers with sticks) and bad real estate.

Benchmarking BSD and Linux

Benchmarking BSD and Linux

more BSD/Linux benchmarks. I used BSD 'back in the day' so I have a soft spot and am more familiar with it than Linux. From the benchmarks, it looks like the more recent FreeBSD releases are pretty impressive with performance as well.

Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas everyone!

I'm still sick as a dog. I'm getting better, but better doesn't mean I feel good. I will be on antibiotics a week tomorrow and I'm still coughing like a coal miner who smokes three packs a day of Lucky Strikes.

Dennis and the kids were over last night and we saw Cole, my nephew's 14 month old son. What a trip! We love babies in the house, so we were exhausted, but we had a nice time last night.

We have to leave the house before 4PM to get a seat and not be rushed for 5PM Mass tonight in Moorestown.

Aside from having a nice, traditional Christmas, I want to get a family picture that we can send to friends and family both here and in Ireland.

Talk to you all soon.

sick, sick, sick

I have been bedridden since Wednesday night. It really sucks to be sick and I have not been this sick in 15+ years, maybe back to when I was single! Anyhow, some heavy duty antibiotics and 50 hours of sleep have at least made me coherent.

NetHack 3.4.3: Main Page

Nethack is a text based adventure game I was addicted too while I was in Ireland. Its available as source and as Win32 binaries. I still think its fun, but don't have a lot of time to mess with it now.

100 Best Novels

100 Best Novels

I like this list better because its annotated. I want to check out some of the kids books and read them with Katie and Megan. We just finished A.A. Milne and I forgot about "The Secret Garden", "The Wind in the Willows" and "The Borrowers".

If they are interested, maybe the original Tarzan. Do you know Tarzan spoke several languages in the book? How was he reduced to "Me Tarzan, you Jane."?

I don't know why, but I'm drawn to 'best of' lists like moths to a flame. Here is a good non-fiction list from National Review. I particularly like the inclusion of Feynman's and C.S. Lewis' writings.
