Open Letter to Laura Bush

Open Letter to Laura Bush:

Sharon Olds is poet, a professor of creative writing at NYU, and a winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award. She was invited by Laura Bush to attend the National Book Festival in Washington, DC in September. The link above is her letter to Mrs. Bush declining the invitation.

You could claim that Dr. Olds is doing this to be dramatic, but I do not think that is the case. It is becoming more obvious that more and more people are just fed up with the Bush administration and they are taking a stand.

"I tried to see my way clear to attend the festival in order to bear witness--as an American who loves her country and its principles and its writing--against this undeclared and devastating war.

But I could not face the idea of breaking bread with you. I knew that if I sat down to eat with you, it would feel to me as if I were condoning what I see to be the wild, highhanded actions of the Bush Administration."

Bush Insults BBC Political Editor at Press Conference

Bush Insults BBC Political Editor at Press Conference

Our President - not to bright and no class. What a combination. What a guy!

Later on, Bush poked fun at the bare-pate of Robinson, joking, “You’d better cover up your bald head, it’s getting hot out.”

The respected British reporter shot back, “I didn’t know you cared.”

Bush responded with a cool, “I don’t.” The Mirror reports that Bush then “snorted disdainfully” and “walked away to laughter.”

Study: Users want self-healing, 50-year storage

Study: Users want self-healing, 50-year storage

This is a good article from Computer World on data storage and retention. I have had many discussions with clients in this regard, mostly for compliance. The bigger problem is archival. Until the 1980's, most of our archival systems were based on paper, microfiche, and other non-digital media.

Now it is 2007. Millions of people generate gigabytes of digital content on a daily basis. Very few are backing up data they generate. Fewer still test data they archive and we are probably a few years away from home appliances capable of automated backup and hopefully this will include some form of archive (and fault tolerance) capability.
