Sarah has her first auto accident

Sarah got rear ended yesterday.

She was stopped, turn signal on, making a left turn into our development. An octogenarian driver failed to stop and hit her.

Neither driver was hurt. No air bags were deployed and there was minimal damage to Sarah's car.

I don't have all the facts, but I'm concerned that the driver that hit her may not be physically capable of driving during rush hour in New Jersey.

Sarah's car is a 1991 Taurus sedan. It appears the bumper absorbed all the impact and at this point I want to get the bumper replaced so its capable of taking another hit.

The police report won't be available until next week, but basically Sarah was not at fault. I do NOT know how we will sort out repair of the car and what impact this will have on our insurance.

Since Sarah leaves for Georgia Tech on Aug 8th and she won't be driving until she returns to NJ in December, I'm not sure if we take her off our policy or what. We have a great insurance agent, so it looks like I'm giving Maryann a ring on Tuesday after the holiday.

TECH TIME: 50 Best Websites: Complete List

I'm a sucker for lists. This is an OK list. I like some of the family and reference links, which were new to me.

Microsoft Research Home

Microsoft Research Home

Microsoft has revamped its Research web site. They have RSS feeds now (yeah!) as well as a new interface. I liked to visit 1-2 times a month, but the RSS feed will make it much easier to keep current.

Microsoft keeps getting beat up because they are the 800 lb gorilla these days. However, with the consolidation of major corporations, we see fewer and fewer pure research facilities Sarnoff (old RCA research lab) is no longer, Bell Labs is a cost center now, TJ Watson still lives and now Microsoft is pouring lots of money and talent into pure research. They should be praised for this insight since no one else is doing so in 2004.

baltimoresun.com - 50 best magazines

I love lists. This is an interesting list, I will check some of them at the library.

I think Real Simple is a little funny. An overly slick magazine with overpriced goods to simplify your life? I'm not interested in trash picking, but I don't want to buy $100 tools to garden my own vegetables.

Bloomsday - 100 year anniversary of Ulysses

Philadelphia Inquirer | 06/13/2004 | Hero of Joyce's gem gets his 100-year due: "2008 Delancey Place"

Bloomsday is celebrated every June 16th. This is the anniversary of the events in James Joyce's Ulysses. The novel details Leopold Bloom's walk about Dublin, Ireland on June 16, 1904 from 8AM until 2AM the following morning.

Dublin and Philadelphia have two of the original copies of Ulysses and there are public readings of Ulysses in each city on Bloomsday. This year is special because its the 100th anniversary.

I have been trying to make it to a Bloomsday event since 1994. I didn't do it when we lived in Ireland (shame on me). This year, I'm working in Philadelphia and will make a special effort to get to at least part of the reading.

Sarah Graduates from Lenape Regional High School

Sarah graduates today.

Its been a very busy month, but its a great day. The weather is cooperating, Sarah is ready, we are ready, things are looking good.

I will post pictures and a link tomorrow. I'm taking pictures with my 35mm because I still don't quite trust digital for the most important moments in our life.

Richard M. Nixon

He Was a Crook - by Hunter S. Thompson

I first read Hunter S. Thompson when he wrote an article for "Rolling Stone" before Jimmy Carter's ran for president in 1974. He was the only one who pegged Carter as winning.

Thompson is not a role model for kids, but in between detox sessions, he is a very good writer with good political insight.
