The Geek Test

The Geek Test: "41.61736% - Major Geek"

Only a Major Geek. I think I'm a notch older than the guy who wrote this, so I don't play some of the games and don't have time for LAN Parties (started after I had kids).

Comcast looks to stop the spam coming from its network

Comcast looks to stop the spam coming from its network

Ahhhh. I can hardly believe it. I will monitor for a week, then remove all the Comcast networks from my IP blacklist.

I complained to Comcast with every SPAM I reported. Aside from overseas SPAM (China, etc), Comcast was the largest source of domestic SPAM.

Ginsberg's Celestial Homework

Ginsberg's Celestial Homework

Although I find the beat poets and writers facinating, they were also terribly disfunctional. Maybe this is the curse of genius.

I found this site on another blog, but its a great reading list from a very broad spectrum of writers.

Science the Endless Frontier

Science the Endless Frontier

A Report to the President by Vannevar Bush, Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, July 1945

Vannevar Bush was an amazing engineer and scientist. The problem we face in the United States is not that we need another Vannevar Bush (although this would be a Wonderful Thing), its that in 2004, we don't have the leadership and vision to understand what is required to move the United States forward into the new millennium.

Dr. Bush also published the groundbreaking article "As We May Think" in the July 1945 edition of The Atlantic Monthly. The Editor's comment "...this paper by Dr. Bush calls for a new relationship between thinking man and the sum of our knowledge" sums up his essay.

Acronis True Image 7.0: backup software.

Acronis True Image 7.0: backup software. Create and restore hard disk images

This got rave reviews in PC Magazine and on several web logs. The other product I was looking at was PowerQuest's Drive Image. I'm a little concerned that Drive Image will 'disappear' now that its been acquired by Symantec. Also, True Image is less expensive (ok, its only $20).

IT Conversations: Bruce Schneier - Beyond Fear

IT Conversations: Bruce Schneier - Beyond Fear

OK, most people are not interested in IT Conversations, but Bruce Schneier is a very sharp security guy.

The real reason I'm posting this link is because I'm trying to leverage my commute time and I plan to download MP3's and play them on my iRiver CD player. IT Conversations has a bunch of interviews and the BBC is doing the same with a wider variety of speakers in the Reith Lectures.

Charlie Reith was my roommate a long time ago, but its not hte same Reith.

Real Dialogue: The Tech interviews Jack Valenti

Real Dialogue: The Tech interviews Jack Valenti

This speaks for itself. Valenti is a smart guy and has represented his masters well over the years. Its just frightening to me that the Bush administration has moved forward with the RIAA and entertainment media agenda and the rights of the individual for fair use and copyright are being undermined.

The general public doesn't understand and they don't seem to care because its impact is not being recognized, but it will in the next 5-10 years.

The Source for Java Technology

The Source for Java Technology

This is the install page for Java. You click "Get It Now", it detects your OS and proceeds with the install. Tested under Win2K and XP.

This resolved problems my mother had running online games (that use Java, which includes pogo.com and other popular sites). It also resolved some minor issues I ran into running software locally and over the web.
