How to forge an S/MIME signature

Jon Udell: How to forge an S/MIME signature

Uh Oh. This is an interesting article. I think the issue is as much with how the certificate is issued and managed as it is with the protocol.

I don't think individual certificates is a good idea in the first place. Corporations should install and configure a PKI and link it to e-mail.

Individuals aren't keen to pay for a private key and most don't know what to do with it even if they get one, which is where the problem Udell describes in this article originates.

First Atomic Clock Wristwatch: "HP 5071A Cesium Beam Primary Frequency Reference "

I don't know why this amuses me so much. Probably because its something I would do and this guy beat me to the punch.

There are some interesting atomic clock and time links at the bottom of the page.

Hush Technologies 2004

Hush Technologies 2004

Another silent PC manufacturer. These look like really nice boxes, but they are ~1500EU, which is close to US$2000. Pretty expensive for my tastes, but I like where the technology is headed.

I'm concerned about how long the fanless, silent PC's will last compared to conventionally cooled devices. Some of our home PC's are 8 years old with no failures (Intel CA801 and 440 motherboards and PC Power and Cooling fans).

Using the GNU text utilities

IBM is a company to watch. IBM's engineering and technology have been underestimated and underrated for years. We are seeing more and more evidence of their long term commitment to *NIX and Linux.

You have to register for access, but its a site I have already returned to several times.

SMTP SPF: Sender Policy Framework

SMTP SPF: Sender Policy Framework

This might be a duplicate post, but this is really, really important.

SPF uses an existing infrastructure (DNS) to determine if an inbound message is authentic or not.

The basic idea is companies add DNS info (TXT) that states the domains and IP addresses that are authorized to send mail on its behalf. A remote SMTP server will query DNS and compare the TXT data with the inbound header information (From, connection IP address). If the TXT data matches the header and IP info, the message is accepted, if not, the connection is dropped with an SMTP error.

The only problem I see is that the vast majority of companies barely know how to spell DNS. The ISP's and registrars are pretty good, but the 'unwashed masses' will need to get a clue pretty quickly. There is also the issue of SMTP server software getting updated to support SPF.

I will be testing this with Exchange and Sendmail in the near future.

Advanced Outlook Password Recovery

ELCOMSOFT: Advanced Outlook Password Recovery

Earlier PST password utilities just didn't work very well. Microsoft was also very limited in how they would handle PST file recovery (afadavit, courier not electronic transfer, etc).

This appears to work. Personal license is $30, Corporate is $60. Not bad!

Nmap 3.50

Nmap 3.50 Press Release: "SCO Corporation of Lindon, Utah (formerly Caldera) has lately taken to an extortion campaign of demanding license fees from Linux users for code that they themselves knowingly distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL. They have also refused to accept the GPL, claiming that some preposterous theory of theirs makes it invalid (and even unconstitutional)! Meanwhile they have distributed GPL-licensed Nmap in (at least) their 'Supplemental Open Source CD'. In response to these blatant violations, and in accordance with section 4 of the GPL, we hereby terminate SCO's rights to redistribute any versions of Nmap in any of their products, including (without limitation) OpenLinux, Skunkware, OpenServer, and UNIXWare. We have also stopped supporting the OpenServer and UNIXWare platforms. "

This is freaking brilliant. I once was a beta tester for SCO (1980's). At one time, with the Xenix/SCO UNIX products, they had the majority of *NIX installations in the world.

That being said, the current CEO/President is on crack and I (and the majority of IT Professionals) are just waiting for Wall Street to catch on and bankrupt SCO.
