Schneier on Security: Clear Shuts Down Operation
Schneier on Security: Clear Shuts Down Operation
Bruce Schneier posted a good article about security issues around Clear, a company that offered 'concierge' security services to speed you through airport security.
I had problems with Clear at the Indianapolis airport earlier this year. A Clear employee attempted to insert a client in front of me in the x-ray queue. When I asked her to clarify what authority she had, she lied (misstated) that her company (Clear) was 'an extension' of the TSA. I pushed back and she inserted her client behind me. I sent a letter to the manager of the Indianapolis airport complaining about the incident, and asking for clarification of Clear's contract with his airport. I don't think I'm alone, and I also think they were crushed by reduced business travel due to financial conditions starting late last year. I only wish I had video of Clear staff in LaGuardia attempting to butt in line.
Bruce's article focuses on what happens with background data Clear collected on clients, which includes fingerprints, iris scans, and personal data.
This is something to consider in the future - what obligation does a company have regarding verified destruction of your personal data?
