Study: Users want self-healing, 50-year storage
This is a good article from Computer World on data storage and retention. I have had many discussions with clients in this regard, mostly for compliance. The bigger problem is archival. Until the 1980's, most of our archival systems were based on paper, microfiche, and other non-digital media.
Now it is 2007. Millions of people generate gigabytes of digital content on a daily basis. Very few are backing up data they generate. Fewer still test data they archive and we are probably a few years away from home appliances capable of automated backup and hopefully this will include some form of archive (and fault tolerance) capability.
